Where Ideas Become Reality
by: ShannieMakes
I have put together a guide to help you locate some of the popular fabrics we like to use as sewers and crafters. Mostly focusing in the Sham Shui Po area of Hong Kong, but will also include some local online shops as well for the really hard to find fabrics. Hopefully this will save you a lot of time hunting down the fabrics you are looking for, especially for those that are here on short visits or just in a rush.
Most of the stalls sell by the yard, but a few are wholesales only and require you to purchase a minimum of 3 to 5 yards. You will require to pay for the order and pick it up in a few days later or pay extra for delivery service.
Please note: The information supplied is mainly based on what I have bought and used in my past projects, and what I have found during my frequent visits to Sham Shui Po. Most of these stalls change their stock depending on season and supply. Once it’s gone it’s gone!
Towards the end of the blog, I will also include more pictures of interesting fabrics and fabrics I don’t know the names of. Just in case you are interested in finding them.

Hi Yasmine, sorry for the late response. I have been off Social Media due to my kid’s school work. I don’t think I can help you with your question because I haven’t worked with those types of fabrics before. If you are based in Hong Kong, it is best to ask the sewists in Sew Hong Kong facebook group. They are a lovely bunch of ladies that can help you out. All the best, Shan
ShannieMakes says
Hi Tamara, sorry for the late response. I haven’t been checking my website for a while. Are you based in Hong Kong? Join the Sew Hong Kong Facebook group. I’m in there. Plenty of sewists can help you with that question. I have seen some tweed like fabric in the stalls in the middle of Ki Lung Street but the stock is constantly changing. Also you could try the Sham Shui Po Fabric market that’s moved to under the Big Flyover/Bridge a few blocks down from Sham Shui Po Police Station. All the best. Shan
Tamara Cumming says
Hi Shannie thanks for your amazing resources! I’m looking for Chanel-style boucle or tweed fabric – doesn’t have to be actual haute couture. Have you got any advice? Thanks
Yasmine Amharech says
thank yu for your great fabric research ,
I am looking for mud silk fabric ( reversible type )
and wool /cashmere blend at a reasonable price
ShannieMakes says
Hi Lee, I have never used this type of fabric before, and never really seen it in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong either. Most of us sewers are just your typical mum sewing for the family really. I did a quick search for you anyway. Most of these companies are in China.Maybe you have better luck contacting them there.

Have you try searching on Amazon? I found some there, but doesn’t look cheap. Best of luck.
Lee says
Do you know where I can find electrically conductive fabric (the kind used for faraday bags/RFID blocking) in Hong Kong? I didn’t see that particular fabric type listed on your site. Thank you for any assistance.
ShannieMakes says
Hi Dave, sorry for the late response. I’m sorry I don’t think I am able to help you there. I only blog about the local fabric stores around my area in Hong Kong. Have you tried Taobao? All the best.
Dave says
Hello!
We are making motorized roller shades for a wealthy chinese client in the US. He is unhappy with boring roller shade fabrics here. Do you (or anyone) know a good source for something more likeable for him ? nice reds and golds. maybe metallics? they need to be able to be wide and tall as well. Thanks for any help!!!
ShannieMakes says
Thanks Catherine. It has taken me a very, very long time. Lol. x
Catherine says
You really put a lot of effort into this and the map as well. Thank you this is exactly what I need.
ShannieMakes says
Hi Carole, have you tried checking in Hawkers Bazaar, Blue Dot 30? They have a lot of fabric in there. I haven’t been looking out for gingham in there before, so I can’t guarantee. The other places that might sell it is usually minimum 5 yards and has to be ordered. Along Yu Chau Street between Blue Dots 20-23. I will be in Sham Shui Po next week. I can keep my eyes peeled for you. Otherwise join HK Sew Facebook and ask the ladies there. I’m sure one of them was working with gingham in a recent project. I’ll get back to you soon.
Carole Tanner says
Any suggestions on finding a gingham black and white check? Or the black and white buffalo check?

Hi Mumtaz, I haven’t come across this lace in Hong Kong, but I know Tissura sells it. Just saw on the listing on their website. Best of luck.

hi! hi! do you know where I can purchase chantily lace in hongkong?
ShannieMakes says
Hi there, I have only noticed Bamboo Silk was sold at this place because it had the words translated into English. Tan Tat Piece Goods Ltd/Wing Ki Piece Goods on G/F Ki Lung Street, Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. Try contacting them on their website: tantat.com.
Are you based outside Hong Kong? If you are in Hong Kong, it is best to pop into all the manufacturers along Ki Lung Street and Yu Chau Street and the surrounding streets. There’s so much to cover. I don’t particularly work with those fabrics, but I’m sure there’s more than one company that sell the fabrics you want. I’ll keep an eye out for you the next time I pop into Sham Shui Po. Viscose and Rayon fabrics can be found more easily but you will need to search every shop unfortunately. Let me know how you get on.👍
