Where Ideas Become Reality
by: ShannieMakes
Hong Kong is not exactly a place that requires a woolly jumper but I am quite surprised this trend is rather popular here. Dotted around Hong Kong you can easily get your hands on some wool/yarn in either dedicated shops or shops selling haberdashery and craft supplies. I only started researching and listing wool/yarn shops in Hong Kong when I was pregnant with my “Little Dumpling”. I wanted to make baby blankets, mittens, as well as cute baby booties for her. I have always wanted to make something for my first born and this was my opportunity to pick up my crochet hooks and start crocheting again after years of neglecting this hobby.
I have been asked why I like to crochet compared to knitting. My mum taught me how to cast on and knit, when I was only 5 years old. I found it very frustrating when I lose a stitch. At the age of 8 I came across a crocheted blanket made of old recycled jumpers and cardigans that were made into patched motifs. I wanted one day to be able to do this. In my early teens, by chance I came across a crochet book in the library. It was then that I taught myself how to crochet. Sometimes I find it difficult to remember the symbols and end up just doing my own thing. Eventually I ended up creating my own patterns because I couldn’t remember the stitches. In my teens I had only made a cardigan/bolero out of 80+ crochet flowers. Took me forever and by the time I completed the flowers I lost interest with the whole project. I’m sure we have all been there!
Well, here I am 20 odd years later. I now crochet amigurumi and baby items. Less time consuming to produce, easy to read symbols/stitches and instructions, and very cost effective! Below I have listed a few shops I have purchased from for making my amigurumi and baby blankets in Hong Kong.
Wai Yin Wool Co
Rm 2128 2/F Sunshine City, Ma on Shan
Tel: (852) 2631 5004
A shop selling wool and knitting/crochet tools as well as personal tuition for those that don’t know how to knit/crochet or read instructions. There is a good range of wool but the prices are around $50 for each ball. There is a small range of crochet hooks, knitting needles and books. I have only purchased the odd ball of wool here and there for baby items.
Lastest information: Sunshine City is currently under some major renovation. This shop is now closed (Sept 2017) until further notice. I will keep you posted.
Update: 2018 Sunshine City is now called MOSTown. The wool shop didn’t come back unfortunately.
Yin Nga
Lucky Plaza, Shatin N.T
Behind Genki sushi restaurant, inside the plaza. This is a small haberdashery shop selling ribbon, yarn, sewing equipment, netting, felt, a small selection of craft fabric, glue, and plastic ribbon. They have a nice selection of bra making lace and some pattern drafting equipment. The range of wool is small but quite cheap great for practicing your knitting or crochet skills.
Was May Knit & Handcraft Co
141 Lucky Plaza, Shantin N.T
Tel: (852) 2693 0898
Around the corner is a dedicated wool/yarn shop. There is quite a range available. You can get a ball from around $20+. Sometimes they have some bargains next to the door. The lady there also teaches knitting. I have bought most of my soft baby wool from here. There is also a range of knitting pattern books available.
Update: Closed down 2018.
1/F 179-181 Fa Yuen Street, Mong Kok, Kowloon
Tel: (852) 2396 2070
Absolute huge selection of wool can be purchased here. I got most of my amigurumi wool and baby bootie wool from here. You can get them from as low as $20 for a small ball. There are also knitting needles and tools to choose from.
Lately they have been stocking crochet hooks as well. Remember to look around the corner in here. The ladies are really nice and not so pushy either. They just let you get on with it. Just don’t come here during the Chinese/Lunar New Year because last time I checked they were closed for over a week. The shop is on the first floor but you will have to walk up around 2 levels of stairs.
Fa Yuen Street Market Stalls
You need to walk all the way to the end of the street where the ice-cream van is. On the very last stall you will see hats hanging outside. If you go inside or around the back of the stall you will see bags of wool. The quality isn’t that great. More acrylic than quality wool but there’s a bit of choice to choose from. There’s the thick chenille type great for chunky knits. The rest were a bit thin so I wasn’t interested. Definitely nothing I wanted for amigurumi.

Absolute everything to do with wool and sewing. Not to mention their cozy seating arrangement for you to relax while flicking through the biggest collection of knitting and sewing pattern books I have seen in Hong Kong so far. Fabrics and craft kits are also available to purchase in store, including felt mascots. They also run knitting, and sewing workshops to help you with your projects. Their Japanese brand wool is just right for amigurumi toys. You can also purchase tools, knitting needles, and sewing threads. There is a huge range for very cute craft fabric suitable for making purse, wallets, and tote bags.
They stock a good variety of wools, tools, books and kits. Quite a few handmade items were on display. The knitted/crochet bags and cuddle toys especially caught my attention. They also stock some specialised yarns that you can’t find easily in basic wool shops. They also run workshops on the premise. The prices seem reasonable.

A good range of knitting and crochet tools in store. Lots of wool/yarn to choose from.
If you are after some T-Shirt Jersey yarn by Wool and the Gang then this is the place to get it from. At $145 for 500g it is great for basket style bag knitting, weaving, crocheting or chunky scarves. It is cheaper if you purchase it from the UK but with postage and packaging it works out roughly the same. They also stock chunky yarn for making those huge rugs and massive scarves.

Lai Chi Kok. Exit D2, Lai Chi Kok Station. Located in a shopping mall called D2 Place 1. Just newly opened in 2017. This replaces the store in the Dragon Centre. It is a huge shop with all sorts of crafts in there. They have a lot of wool, great for amigurumi. They also have crochet patterns for toys, fleece for felting, craft books, UV Resin, silicone moulds, shrink plastic, and big range of clays. You need to visit this place.
ABC Knits 5K175, 5th Floor Apple Mall, Dragon Centre, Yen Chow Street, Sham Shui Po.
They stock a good variety of yarn for crochet and knitting as well as knitting needles and crochet hooks. They seem to be expanding and have a little unit opposite their stall so have a rummage there if you can’t find what you want.
Tak Cheung Company. New location (20018) No.7201 7th floor Apple Mall, Dragon Centre, Yen Chow Street, Sham Shui Po. Close to the back lifts.
Not exactly a wool/yarn shop but a craft shop. They seem to stock some yarn which I haven’t seen anywhere else. Some of it is more like cord for crocheting. Great for making those crochet fruits ands flowers for window displays. Sometimes they have a few cotton yarns lying round if you are lucky.
$28 for one ball of yarn or 4 for $100. Not exactly woolly jumper material but not bad for small craft projects. You find this stall on Ki Lung Street, Sham Shui Po. Download the map to help you locate it. Blue dot 4.
At least 4 shops between Red dots 2-7. Wing Fung Ind. Hang Chow No.209 (2 Chinese characters)to name a few.
Pop Up Shop in the corner between Red dot 18 and Green dot 4.
Here are a few more wool/yarn shops I have on my list. I haven’t had the time to visit since I had my “Little Dumpling”! Give them a call before visiting in case they have either closed down or moved. I will try my best to keep you informed.

Last but not least, you can pop into a Justco Living Plaza. The brand is actually Daiso. I know this store is very popular in the USA and Asia. I haven’t seen them in UK yet.
They stock a small range of wool. Quality you can practice on. Definitely not the type of wool to knit for your loved ones to wear unless you are planning to give them a rash, but definitely not bad for a craft project or amigurumi. They also have a good range of crochet hooks and some knitting needles. Although I already have a set of hooks I still bought the entire selection from here.
Do take note: Not every store stock the same variety of goods.
My favourite Justco Living Store is just off Nathan Road, Mong Kok. I think this store is way better than the Flagship store in Lai Chi Kok. I almost made it my bucket list to visit every Justco Living Plaza in Hong Kong, but once I found the best I stopped visiting the rest!
Well, that’s my list of wool/yarn shops in Hong Kong. I hope this list will help you with your projects or even persuade you to pick up your hobby again.
Happy Knitting/Crocheting!
