Hello Crafters, Designers, Sewers, Makers, DIYers, Buyers, Scrapbookers, Students and Teachers from around the world! Here is an early Christmas present from me. The newly spruced Sham Shui Po Map for 2020. The last map took me years to plan, by the time I released it, it was almost time to update it again!
Click here to download the new 2020 SSP Map
For recent shop closures, please go to the bottom of this blog to check before using the map. I will try to keep this part updated whenever I venture out to the Po.
Due to the current situation in Hong Kong, and Covid-19 a lot of the shops have either closed down or moved to new locations. I have updated all the locations of all the shops to the best of my knowledge. I don’t have much time now to keep tabs on all the shops because I can’t pop out as frequently as I used to, due to home schooling my child until the kindergarten opens.
The new map has more numbers added to it so that it is easier to locate the shops or items. I have made it more colourful so that it’ll look nice in a diary or on any wall display. There will be a new map that can be added to this to expand the area. The Mong Kok map for all things Arts & Crafts, Toys and Collectables to Baking Supplies! I have been planning this in the past year. Yup, it’s happening.
Click on the list of links below to take you to my blogs which works alongside this map. Everything is colour coordinated and numbered so that it is easier to follow.

Hi Judy, so sorry I missed your message. I have been off social media due to my child’s schoolwork. You could try this place because they could possibly send it to you since you are now back in Australia. If you search Tailor & Alteration Needlework Club for more detail. Their website is: needlework club.com. They used to be in a bigger shop a few years ago, and I remember seeing small samples of sashiko fabric pieces/ or kits. I don’t remember seeing threads individually sold. If you find the word Japan in Kanji, use that in the search (Website might not have English). A book with designs is available in the search. Have you followed me on Instagram? You can easily get hold of me there than the website. Best of luck. Shan

Hi Shannie,
I’m a High School Textiles teacher in Sydney Australia and will be coming to Hong Kong on 10/7/24 for 10 days. I want to find some sashiko thread and templates.
Do you know where I could possibly find some?
Judy

Hi Alice, glad you are finding the map useful. Sham Shui Po is changing a lot. Every month I go back something has changed. I’ll try to keep places updated, but Summer is here, so I try not to go out too often as I suffer really bad in this weather. Lol. You can message me on Facebook: ShannieMakes Official/Messenger if you are stuck and can’t find something in Sham Shui Po. I’ll try my best to help out. I am not a native, but I can always ask around for you if I don’t know the answer. Enjoy.

Loving this guide – can imagine how painstaking it must have been to put this together but a godsend as you will have helped many a crafters locate their supplies in the area. I have only started sourcing fabrics/sewing tools etc in Hong Kong recently as I had no clue of where to go to before in SSP – although a treasure trove and sewers paradise.. is a little overwhelming at first visit. I have been to the area a few times now, but discover more each time I go… I have printed your map for my next visit! Hoping to discover more shops

Hi there, sorry for the late response. I haven’t used any of these services, so I can’t really recommend anyone. Most times I hear people take it over to Shenzhen to copy, at that nearby mall. Due to the current situation, no one is able to pop over. Sometimes I hear from some local sewists that they ask the people in Hawkers Bazaar to help copy sewable items. If you are living in Hong Kong have a search on Facebook for Sew Hong Kong. I am in the group, and people in there have used local services in Sham Shui Po. Maybe they could recommend you a place. As for your second question, if you are after a second hand sewing machine, best to ask in the sewing group. A few members have used such service too. I know along Yen Chow Street on the same side as Dragon Centre, somewhere between Fuk Wa Street and Un Chau Street are probably 2 second hand sewing machine shops. Hope this helps? Shan

This might not be in the Spirit of your blog so apologies if that is the case, but are their tailors in the area that can take material purchased and turn it into a copy of something. I imagine there are lots, but the only way I have found to access skilled Tailors is to go through the Tailor shops in TST. They are a bit out of my price range.
Same question re: Hawkers market. I saw a lot of sewing machines but I was not sure who to ask or who to trust in this tricky matter :-).
Great Map, by the way!

Hi Novice Sewer, sorry for the late response. I only use 100% Cotton. Some people use quilting cotton because it has a higher count or denser. I also use a felted layer in the middle. Hope this help?

What kind of cotton is best for sewing face masks please?

Hi Will, glad you liked it. Took me a few years to do that. Lol

This is a work of art. I thought I was an old hand at sourcing craft supplies in SSP, but this is just so nicely put together and informative.

Awww, thank you. Yes, this place is the best hang out ever. If you have time to pop into the island, go to Tailor & Alteration Needlework Club in Causeway Bay. It’s a shop. Just do a search online. Got everything you need if you don’t want to sweat in the streets. There’s also a toilet! All the best. Shan x

Wow, this must have taken a lot of time and effort to compile.
I recently moved a 20-min walk from this area, and coincidentally just decided to start hand embroidery. I wasn’t sure where to find the materials for it, so I’m happy to find your guides and map. Thank you!

Hi Sandy, OMG you will be in for a treat! Along Red dots 1-7 you will find at least minimum 4 shops. First try Real Speach Ltd. They have bargains, but not sure if they have what you want. Next door is a shop of random stuff, might have it. Hasymotoya is a big cord and tape shop. Wing Fung Industries is another huge shop. Definitely in Flying Dragon a few doors down, they specialise in cord and tape. These are just a few I can think of. Just keep your eyes peeled along 1-7. Blue dot 5, 34, 10 sell cord, but I usually don’t look out for para-cord there so I can’t guarantee. https://shanniemakes.com/ultimate-shopping-guide-4/. This guide has photos of Flying dragon and all the shops labelled with Red dots. Happy shopping, and best of luck. Map is ready for download.

There were a few stores that sold Paracord, my grandsons want to get some more when we come in December , is there a shop number so we don’t have to go searching?
