Where Ideas Become Reality
by: ShannieMakes
Here is a quick A-Z guide to buying sewing, craft, baking and making tools/equipment, in Hong Kong.
The original A-Z guide was getting a bit too long and the download time was getting compromised. This is why I have decided to chop this guide into 2 parts. Part 1 is focused on A-M, and N-Z in Part 2. The first A-Z Guide was using some pictures I have taken with my old phone, which wasn’t great for the job. I have redone a lot of the pictures in this new blog. Once in a while I re-vist my old blogs and try to improve on them. I just felt this had to be done even though it was so time consuming. Hope this is useful to anyone that will be visiting Hong Kong in the near future!
AFRICAN PRINTS
I hope I am right? African prints? Looks similar to one of the African Ankara printed fabrics I once worked with. You can find this in a shop on 137 Ki Lung Street, between Wong Chuk Street and Maple Street.
This is not the wax fabric you find in genuine African fabric. This is more of a synthetic, soft type of fabric.
For wax fabrics go to Wang Kit Trading Company G/F 133 A Yu Chau Street. Tel: 2380 3006. Mobile: 5628 5269. I have been told you can get fabrics around $30/Yard.
APPLIQUE
You can find iron-on appliqué from quite a few stores around Sham Shui Po. I just keep finding more and more each time I pop in to do some shopping. Too many to list here. I am going to name a range for you to explore. From cheap upwards and quality to suit your budget.
197 Yu Chau Street. Between Red dot 1-5. Walk a few store down you should see plenty before you cross over Pei Ho Street.
Centre of Ki Lung Street Outdoor Fabric Stall. Between Blue dot 7 and 8.
Near Blue dot 1. 230 Ki Lung Street. HK, Johnson Lace.
(Picture) Kwong Yiu. Next door to Pink dot 1. Red dot 5, Kwong Yiu, 2nd shop.
Lion Head iron on appliqué is available at Accessory Republic Company Limited. Shop C, G/F 94 Pei Ho Street. Please note this is the address on their business card. I found their shop on Yu Chau Street around Red dot 5-7. You need to go up stairs. They have some really nice appliqué there that I have not seen anywhere else. For example opera styles and other Chinese themes.
The Lion Head is also at J&J Imitation Jewellery, Red dot 4-7.
Letters and number at Kwong Yiu, Red dot 5.
Blue dot 10. 161 Ki Lung Street. High Faithful Trading Company.
A few doors down from Blue dot 25. It is a button shop but they have some iron on appliqués hanging outside.
In corner of Nam Cheong Street and Yu Chau Street is a pop up shop just recently open. They do felt squares too as well as a lot of random appliqué and sewing notions. Red dot 18 and Green dot 4.
Hawkers Bazaar is another good location for random appliqués and iron on patches. Blue dot 30.
Handcrafter at D2 Place 1, Lai Chi Kok Mtr exit D2. This store stocks letters, numbers and a range of designs to choose from.
Grateful Button Manufacturing Ltd. 209 Ki Lung Street. Close to Blue dot 25.
AQUA FILM (Water Soluble Film)
I usually use this stuff to help stabilise freehand machine embroidery. Once the backing is not needed it is soaked in water to dissolve it away. If you don’t completely wash it away the gunk dries hard. Some of my students find this useful for some textiles techniques they try to achieve.
Handcrafter, D2 Place 1, Lai Chi Kok Mtr exit D2.
AWL
You can find awls in any leather shops.
Kwong Yiu. Next to Pink dot 1.
Pak Ko Garment Equipment Co, Ltd. 129 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Sham Shui Po. Great place for garment industry equipment.

BATTING
(Picture) They are no longer at location Blue dot 19. In 2021 they have moved to 128 Nam Cheong Street. Just a few minutes away. Close to location Blue dot 27. The batting comes in different weights. Around $10-$12 per yard. These are not the iron on type. Synthetic material.
People say you will find some batting at Blue dot 9, Ki Lung Street stall. I didn’t see any as I walked past last time.
Billion Victor Textiles, Blue dot 10. Above left is iron-on batting. The one on the right is stick-on batting. It is like sticky back felting.
I have also seen some random pieces of batting and wadding hanging at the back of the stall, in the centre of the Ki Lung Street. Roughly between opposite Pink dot 7 and Blue dot 10.
BAKING CRAFT/TOOLS
(Picture) The best place is on Shanghai Street. Yau Ma Tei Mtr Station exit B2. Between Waterloo Rd and Hi Lung Lane.
See: Shanghai Street, Cooks & Bakers Paradise.
Red dot 9 is a bead shop but also sells random stuff like silicone moulds for crafting.
I have seen some on Tai Nan Street outside a button shop opposite the 2 leather shops.
(Picture) In the Dragon Centre, Yen Chow Street, you can find a few stalls on the 7th floor Apple Mall mostly around the far right hand side corner. Some silicone moulds are around $12.
Update: Summer 2020 closed down.
There is a small selection in Cutie Creative 7100.
Update: Summer 2020 closed down.
Cakes Library Company. Rm 603, 6th Floor, Sino Centre, Nathan Road. Mong Kok. I stumbled upon this shop by accident. They seem to stock everything and anything to do with baking!
BAG MAKING FABRIC
(Picture) Blue dot 3 is a store that sew fabric tote bags. They also have canvas fabric in cute prints available.
Update: Closed down summer 2021.
Look at the shops between Pink dots 2 and 6.
Look behind the market stalls Blue dot 8.
(Picture) This is the best place to buy cute fabric prints for making craft items such as bags and book covers. Located on Ki Lung Street between Shek Kip Mei Street and Wong Chuk Street. Kei Hing Co is no longer at Blue dot 7. In 2021 they moved across the road to a larger premise. You can’t miss it.
Prices start from just over $20 for medium weight laminated cloth. Heavy weight is around $40+.
If you are after BAG MAKING BITS, pop to the new Kwong Yiu store on Yu Chau Street. Roughly Red dot 5. You’ll find most things and more in there, such as handles, boning, wires, and clasps.
BAMBOO HANDLES
Kwong Yiu. Blue dot 2. This is the smaller store, but a lot quieter.
Kwong Yiu. Red dot 5 is a bigger store, but a lot busier.
Look around Blue dot 4.
This place is great for all bag making components like wire and plastic inserts for handles.
They also stock hat making supplies.
BEADS
All along Yu Chau Street. Red dots between 1-9 on the map you should find plenty of shops to explore.
Seed bead packets in A&A Accessories.
High quality, possibly glass beads can be bought for roughly $15 a mini tube from Handcrafter. Location is at D2 Mall, Lai Chi Kok Exit D2. 4th floor.
(Picture) This shop is called Tin Fu International. They have 2 shops on this road. This one is located around Red dot 6. You can find quality Miyuki glass beads at the other Tin Fu International, around Red dot 9.
Pak Lee Hong, around Red dot 5, is a heaven for beads, hot glue crystals, beads, sequins and jewellery components. I spotted some Beaded Lettering here.
Mini Bead Loom. Handcrafter sells them.
BEDDING FABRIC
End of Ki Lung Street Fabric Stall. Blue dot 8. Also check behind the stalls, especially in Min Kee. Look around opposite Pink dot 7.
Be warned, stock is limited and the designs change throughout the months.
BIAS BINDING/TAPE
Green dot 6, Pui Kee Ho, 132 Nam Cheong Street. These are the Poly-cotton type binding. Around 12mm wide. I am not sure if they do them in other widths.
Very pretty and cute bias binding tape at Forest Fabric. Lai Chi Kok Mtr exit D2. Rm 5. Block A2, 7/F Cheung Kong Fty, Bldg, 5 Cheung Shun Street, Lai Chi Kok.
These are probably the same quality as the shop above.
Centre of Ki Lung Street Fabric Stall. Not much choice but cheap. Around $12 a pack. Not as much choice but still a few colours to choose from.
(Picture below) Blue dot 10. 161 Ki Lung Street. High Faithful Trading Company. Same quality in the stalls outside, but more choice of colours.
BIAS TAPE MAKER
Kwong Yiu. Next to Pink dot 1.
Kwong Yiu (New shop). Red dot 5.

United Pattern Design. Rm 33, 5/F Cosmopolitan Centre, 760 Nathan Road, Prince Edward.
Needlework Club, 19/F Kin Tak Fung Commercial Building 467-473 Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay.
If you are looking for size 9mm bias binding maker (Orange colour if you are buying a set), Tung Shing at Purple dot 1 sells the Clover brand one. It will cost you around $120. If you don’t mind the colour or brand, then pop to Kwong Yiu near Red dot 5. They stock the orange size 9mm. Cost around $25-$35. A lot of places don’t sell this size and most sets don’t come with it. Only occasionally I see them on AliExpress. United Pattern Design fashion school sell the Clover brand. Slightly cheaper than Tung Shing, but still over $100.
BLYTHE DOLL
I have accidentally found a shop in Sham Shui Po selling Blythe for $1980 and Mini Blythe for $1990. I am not sure if they are genuine. The shop didn’t look specialised enough since it had a lot of poor quality plastic toys as well as stationery. Located on Ki Lung Street, close to Yen Chow Street side. Around 2nd or 3rd shop from the escalator but not on the escalator side. You can’t miss the shop. They have a lot of plastic balls, toys and inflatable hanging outside.
Hung Hing Toys. 19B Tai Yuen Street, Wan Chai. If you are coming from the Mtr it should be on the right hand side in the centre of Tai Yuen Street.
582-592 Nathan Road. Sino Centre. Mong Kok. (You need to get a lift up to the 3rd floor. You can’t access it by escalator). Rm 304 Naughty Guy. Update: September 2018. They used to sell a lot of Blythes, but in my recent visit, they are down to their last mini Blythe. Not worth visiting real.
CC Toys. Shop 312, 3/F, 1N Sai Yeung Choi Street South, CTMA Centre, Mong Kok.
Ginza Plaza. 2A Sai Yeung Choi Street South, Mong Kok. I haven’t personally been to this shop but only recommended by a friend.
BONDAWEB/FUSIBLE
Bondaweb or Iron on fusible (Serng Min Pok) is found in the Bra Pad Stall on Shek Kip Mei Street, between Ki Lung Street and Yu Chau Street. $10 per metre. Blue dot 19.
Update: Summer 2021, they have moved to 128 Nam Cheong Street.
They might sell it at Blue dot 9.
Hang Chow, 209 Yu Chau Street. The name is in 2 Chinese characters outside.
You can buy this stuff but under an inch wide from Ikea for curtain and trouser/pants hems. They come in different weights. I know the Ikea stuff is super strong for curtains.
BONING
Sam Hing Ho Haberdashery Co, Ltd. 80 Nam Cheong Street. Rigilene plastic 8mm as well as metal ones available. Probably the best place in town for this stuff. Close to Pink dot 3.
United Pattern Design. Rm 33, 5/F Cosmopolitan Centre, 760 Nathan Road, Prince Edward. They have 8mm plastic black, and white.
Kwong Yiu (New shop). Red dot 5.
Pop up shop on corner of Nam Cheong Street and Yu Chau Street (Corner of Red dot 18 and Green dot 4). I saw a packet of plastic Rigilene boning hanging on the side of the table. I didn’t check for the size or colour.
Pak Lee Hong. Red dot 6.
BOWLS
Beginning of Ki Lung Street, near the bridge that takes you over to the Dragon Centre on Yen Chow Street. About the 8th shop down. A shop that sell all sorts of houseware but if you look inside you can see very nice rice bowls. Prices range from $6 HKD for rice bowls to a couple of dollars for larger plates. I have found some plates that cost over €55 for a set of 4. I bought mine just over $40 HKD for 4!
There’s another newly opened pop up bowl shop on Nam Cheong Street, somewhere between Aplui Street and Ki Lung Street.
Other locations of these shops are in Prince Edward. Located in the corner of Tung Choi Street and Bute Street if I remember correctly. Otherwise it’s the next corner along Bute Street.
There are 2 more locations I know that is on Nathan Road but they are too far apart and I usually walk the whole distance all the way from Prince Edward to Tsim Sha Tsui to do my serious shopping! They sell similar stuff too so not worth the walk just to buy crockery.
BRA MAKING ACCESSORIES
BROTHER MACHINE PARTS
I am not sure if they do sewing machine parts, but I know they do handheld printing machines parts as well as office machinery parts. Very efficient. Brother TST Office Centre: Unit 620-626 6th Floor, Ocean Centre, 5 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tui.
BUCKRAM
Buckram, the stuff for making curtain pelmet, curtain tie backs, and give bags body. You will find this in the Bra Pad Stall in the road between Shek Kip Mei Street and Yu Chau Street. Blue dot 19.
Update: Summer 2021, they have moved to 128 Nam Cheong Street.
Kwong Yiu, Red dot 5.
See some recently (Summer 2020) Uncle Korean, opposite Pink Dot 7.
BUTTONS (SEE SHELL BUTTONS)
Download map for more details.
For fabric covered buttons, 74 Un Chau Street. This is slightly off the map. Around 2 streets from the back of the Golden Computer Arcade. They do a variety of buttons ranging from metal jeans buttons to buckles. Simple fabric buttons start from around $20 for 5, but prices vary depending of materials used, quantity and size of the buttons.
CALICO
Ki Lung Street, roughly 2nd or 3rd stall in are 2 fabric stalls selling calico. I could see medium and heavy weight calico, muslin or something close to cheese cloth.
Roughly $10 to $15 a yard for medium weight calico.
Blue dot 7 also has calico in medium weight.
Kings Beauty Company Ltd. 160 Yu Chau Street. Blue dot 21.
Wholesalers, you can order calico ranging from thin cotton to heavy canvas thicknesses.

CANVAS FABRIC
Kei Hing Co. Previously at location Blue dot 7, now moved across the road 2021. Stocks plain, natural, thick canvas fabric as well as printed fabrics.
Just opposite this store, looking at the market stalls in the centre of the street, are 2 more stalls selling plain canvas fabric. You might have to look under the pile of calico to search for it.
For more printed stuff, look around Blue dot 10.
CHINESE COILED BUTTONS
(Picture) A small selection is available in Hawkers Bazaar. Blue dot 30. The designs are quite basic though.
Blue dot 10. High Faithful Trading Company.
Hashimotoya, Red dot 3. Red dot 4-6. On the right hand side of Kwong Yiu is a shop, I think it is Pak Lee Hong, they sell some assorted packs of knotted buttons. You can see them in the bargain bins outside. Around $15 for a few pairs.
(Picture) Lee Wah Hong is one that seems to have quite an extensive range. Their new premise is now located at Blue dot 29 on Yu Chau Street.
Sometimes outside Wing Fung Industries you can find bargain buttons in packets outside the shop.

CLAYS
(Picture) Handcrafter, Lai Chi Kok Mtr exit D2. D2 Place One.
More specialised clay products which I highly recommend is a bit out of the way: Yee Long Trading, Marina House. Sai Wan Ho. This place sells all crafty stuff from miniature art to clay flower making.
CN Square on Nathan Road. Opposite Mc Donalds. Closest Mtr: Yau Ma Tei Station. They have a huge selection of clays ranging from Japanese Grace clays to Italian Das clays. For some brands, you can get small packs of clay to experiment with without having to commit to buying a larger packet. The prices are around $15 for a small sample packet. I did notice some larger packets are about $20 more than some places I know. You need to shop about for prices. Be warned: Some clays are double the price compared to Handcrafter!

CORD FOR DRAWSTRING
(Picture) My favourite place is at Wing Fung Industrial 201-207-Yu Chau Street. Red dot 4. They also sell organza ribbon, wired edge ribbon with colour gradients, shirring elastic in humongous rolls, bra elastic, bra and bikini fastenings, button, leather tools, appliqué, seatbelt straps, hoody flat cord, elastic in many sizes and that’s just to name a few items.
A couple of other shops between Red dot 1 to 7 also stock elasticated cord.
CORDUROY FABRIC
Corner of Ki Lung Street and Wong Chuk Street. Opposite Blue dot 9. Stock changes depending on the seasons, so be warned. Update: December 2018. Stall is no longer there.
Hawkers Bazaar, Blue dot 30. Current rumour going around said it will be closed for good in October 2022.
CORSAGES
Red dot 1-3. 197C Yu Chau Street. Lee Wah Hong Decorations Co. They sell a lot of random stuff but I see corsages on the wall. Hang Chow, 209 Yu Chau Street.
The picture was taken at a shop that unfortunately closed down in Summer 2019, but you will still find corsages in the locations mentioned above and below.
Kwong Yiu. Next to Pink dot 1.
(Picture) Kwong Yiu. Red dot 5, is a new shop. Just open recently in August 2018. This is one of my favourite shops at the moment. Plenty of pressed flower pieces to choose from. Prices are around $12 for 15 pieces. You will be spending hours in here! They have a bigger variety of corsages like the ones above.
CROCHET/KNITTED TUBE
Kwong Yiu. Next door to Pink dot 1. These are great for making quick costumes such as tutus and little bodices. Also at their new store, Red dot 5.
CROCHET SUPPLIES
(Picture) Red dot 14. Tak Cheung Company 7200 7th floor Apple Mall, Dragon Centre. I am not sure what the type of yarn is called. It is more like a cord. $8 a skein/bunch. I think this is similar to the yarn you use with the Punch Needle tool. You unravel it and it becomes fuzzy.
Update: Closed down Summer 2019. May have moved. Will update if I find out.

Next to the zip store on corner of Ki Lung and Wong Chuk Street. (Below)

DUMMY/DRESSFORM (MANNEQUIN)
Norray Enterprise. Rm D, E, 7/F, European Asian Building, 749 Nathan Road, Prince Edward exit C1. Cheapest 1/2 scale I have found. At around $250. They also do full-scale dummies. Please check they could be modelled to an asian body and not western. I have noticed they also supply to the UK company like Morplan.
United Pattern Design. Rm 33, 5/F Cosmopolitan Centre, 760 Nathan Road, Prince Edward. They do the 1/2 scale and 1/4 dummies. If I remember correctly the 1/2 scale was over $300 and the 1/4 was a lot more!
Pak Ko Garment Equipment Co, Ltd. 129 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Sham Shui Po. Great place for garment industry equipment. They deal with custom mannequins.
Wealth Town, Units D, G and F of New Trend Centre. 104 King Fun Street. San Po Kong. HK

EMBROIDERY BACKING
Shek Kip Mei Street Bra & Shoulder Pad Stall. Between Yu Chau Street and Ki Lung Street. I think this one is non iron-on. I’ll find out next time. Blue dot 19.
Update: Summer 2021, they have moved to 128 Nam Cheong Street.
These can be found all over Sham Shui Po, especially along Red dots 4-7 on Yu Chau Street. Also at Blue dots 1-4.
EMBROIDERY IRON-ON PATCHES

EMBROIDERY THREADS/FLOSS
(Picture) Blue dot 2. C&S Industrial Company. DMC brand threads. Higher sheen and better quality I have seen around. They also sell the metallic type too but very small range.
Red dots 2-7 should be at least 3 stores. 1 is a pop up shop number 197 B, Wing Fung Industrial, Pak Lee Hong, Hang Chow at 209 Yu Chau Street, A&A Accessories, Bead Box, and Kiwi tucked somewhere in-between.
Blue dot 4. Low quality but suitable for most crafts.

(Picture) Opposite Blue dot 8. Sticky back Eva foam. Update: The shop no longer exist.
Tai Tak PVC Leather. 130 Yu Chau Street. Blue dot 18.
Pink dot 2 might sell Eva foam. They have other foam products in store.
EYES
You can easily find plastic eyes from most stationery shops in Hong Kong. If you are out and about in Sham Shui Po, then most haberdashery and craft stores stock them if you keep your eyes peeled. The best places I would recommend will be:
Handcrafter, Lai Chi Kok Mtr exit D2. D2 Place One.
Handcrafter sell eyes but mainly the ones for making fleece animals. The ones with a stick on the back. Looks like a mushroom on the side. When stuck down the eyes sit above the fleece. They are the only place I know that stock ones that look like cat eyes. They also sell noses in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit the type of animal you are making. Only a few dollars these which I though was very cheap.
For googly eyes, Blue dot 4, Wing Fung Industrial, Red dot 4. I have seen only the large size here.
(Picture) Wah Kee, Red dot 8. Update: Closed down December 2018.
161 Ki Lung Street. High Faithful Trading Company. Blue dot 10.

FABRIC SAMPLE & MANUFACTURES
Yu Chau Street, Wong Chuk Street, Ki Lung Street, Shek Kip Mei Street and the surrounding streets all have samples for you to take. Some might not be so generous and only give you snippets of what you want. If you are just after free samples it is best to quickly take them before someone comes out.
FAKE GRASS
5th floor Apple Mall, Dragon Centre, Sham Shui Po. Back right corner you will find a few stalls selling miniature craft. They all belong to the same company. The original number was stall 5K356 but they have relocated recently. $10 for roughly around A4 size fake grass. That’s the lower quality one. The picture on the left cost me $30. This grass is slightly longer and better quality. The size is A4 length and about 5cm wider than an A4. The picture on the right was bought from the same place, about $35. Some might have imperfections so do check before you buy. Both backs are non adhesive.
CN Square on Nathan Road sold by the roll. I can’t remember how big it was, but it was wider than almost 2 A4 pieces of paper side by side. The length was more than 50 cm. The backing is self adhesive. The fibres keep falling off. Maybe it’s just the loose fibres because I couldn’t see any bald patches. I made the mistake of impulse buying and bought this horrible fake grass from them. I do not recommend it. It’s in the model making department. As for the price, I can’t remember but I think it wasn’t too expensive otherwise I wouldn’t have bought it.
Jusco Living Plaza garden section. $12 a pair of moss rocks. Roughly 7x7cm by 5cm thick. Please note: all Jusco Living Plaza’s stock different items.
FAT QUARTERS
Check out Modes4U and Kawaiifabric.com. I think they are the same company but selling different stock.
Tour Embroidery a good selection of fabric bundles.
Needlework Club.I have been told they stock fat quarters but I haven’t been myself.
Shopping Apps such Banggood is popular in Hong Kong. Aliexpress and Taobao is also handy to have.
I usually get the hubs to do the ordering. Banggood is good. As for Taobao, you will need to know Chinese. Do take note: even though most items are made in China or even stocked across the border, somehow some sellers just don’t deal with buyers from Hong Kong! And there’s Ebay you can try.
