This is my fifth and final mask pattern for this collection. The Butterfly Mask has a higher nose shape, great for those that have higher or meatier noses. The front panel is flat so that you can it swap it for a clear piece of plastic to make it easier for lip reading. Depending on your face shape, this mask has a bit more room around the mouth area compared to surgical style masks. This mask cups under the chin to give you that extra coverage. Without the use of a disposable filter, this design is still 3 layers thick if you use option 1 filter lining.
The tutorial will be only be showing you how to achieve the mask using option 1, the conventional filter lining. Please go to either the Basic 1 Piece Mask or the Cover Mask and skip to the 2nd half of the tutorial to see how option 2 (Reverse Filter Lining) is applied.
For this mask I sourced my fabric locally on Ki Lung Street, Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. You may find something similar on Modes4u or Kawaiifabric.com (same company).
xpandlaces was kind enough to send me some of their laces to sample with. They are slightly tougher compared to the dress elastics most people are using. If you do use these, be prepared to add between 5-10 cm extra compared to the normal length you are using if you are making masks with over-head fastenings. This is to compensate for the stretch.
This is a rough estimate of the length of elastic you will require for the over-head elastic fitting if you are using xpandlaces. Ideally you should fit it to the person first before cutting off the final length and finishing it. These measurements includes a 2cm overlap for securing the elastic ends to create a loop. Measurements given does not include length for the mini loops for attaching to the mask edges. Depending on the brand, elastic composition, type of elastic, and size of the head, you may need slightly shorter measurements.

Disclaimer: This not a medical grade face mask. Please, do your own research for the type of materials you will need, and adapt it to my designs. I am only supplying the patterns and showing you how to construct the mask.
Let’s Start!
- To check if the size is going to fit your face, print off 2 paper pattern sheets. Staple the front seams together and fold in the seam allowance and elastic binding edge. Fit it to your face. This way it is better than sewing one up and realising you need another size. I am not able to give you the finished measurements because everyone has different level of sewing skills and will be using different fabric thicknesses. I could give you my finished measurement, but there is always someone saying it is not the same as theirs. My apologies. To give you something to compare it to, I wear a Large in this pattern. It sits on my nose bridge and nearly 2cm (0.78inches, 3/4inches) under my chin.
- The files now have measurements in inches for my fellow US followers.
When printing (Ideally on A4 International Paper) all patterns should be printed 100% scale with No Scale to Fit Page/Media. The envelope should be printed Landscape and Fit Page/Media to not waste space on the paper.
Here is a little gift for you to keep your patterns together and organised. Lookout for the other designs.
All you need to do is cut it out and dab a bit of glue to the sides, wait for it to dry and you are good to go.
I am not able to make the envelope into a PDF file because it will be too large and will cause my website to crash. This is because my web hosting company cannot handle the downloading traffic. Last time it caused my site to be down for 3 days! For now, it will be a JPEG file.
Be sure to follow or subscribe to ShannieMakes at Facebook, Instagram or YouTube Channel for updates. Facebook is probably easier for me to update everyone since I can add links and folders in there.
See you next time!
