Hi there, first of all I like to say a big “Thank You” to all of you for supporting me by visiting my website, following me on Instagram, and Facebook, not forgetting subscribing to my YouTube Channel. I am so ever grateful! I have finally hit 1000 subscribers on YouTube! Thank You for making this happen. XX
THANK YOU!
Before I move onto my next collection of Face Masks, all with Nose Bar and 2 Filter Options, I thought it is best for me to revisit one of my most downloaded Duckbill Style Face Mask Patterns. This time I have made it with a slot for placing replacement filters. I know a lot of people have managed to adapt the pattern to put their own filter lining in, but this is more of a tutorial aimed at those that don’t know how to adapt the pattern, or if you are a beginner.
On the original Duckbill Style Face Mask, I made it 3 layers. The binding was necessary because potentially you will be sewing over 9 layers of fabric! The print on the fabric was a little tricky, making it even harder to sew through. This was why the binding was the best option to use.
Disclaimer: This not a medical grade face mask. Please, do your own research for the type of materials you will need, and adapt it to my designs. I am only supplying the patterns and showing you how to construct the mask.
Let’s Start!
- You will need to print the patterns off twice so you could use one as the main pattern and the other as the filter lining.
- To check if the size is going to fit your face, print off 2 paper pattern sheets (use one later for the filter lining pattern). Staple the centre front seams together and fold in the seam allowance and elastic binding channel. Fit it to your face. This way it is better than sewing one up and realising you need another size. I am not able to give you the finished measurements because everyone has different level of sewing skills and will be using different fabric thicknesses. I could give you my finished measurement, but there is always someone saying it is not the same as theirs. My apologies. To give you something to compare it to, I wear a medium. It sits 1 cm (0.4inches, 3/8 inch) before my nose bridge and 1cm (0.4inches, 3/8 inch) under my chin.
- The files now have measurements in inches for my followers that still uses imperial measurements.
When printing (Ideally on A4 International Paper) all patterns should be printed 100% scale with No Scale to Fit Page/Media. The envelope should be printed Landscape and Fit Page/Media to not waste space on the paper.
Download by clicking on the size you require. Remember to download the envelope if you want to use one. I am not able to make the envelope into a PDF file because it will be too large and will cause my website to crash. This is because my web hosting company cannot handle the downloading traffic. Last time it caused my site to be down for 3 days! For now, it will be a JPEG file.
Elastic sizes:
Small 2x18cm (7.08 inches) Medium 2x21cm (8.26 inches)
Large 2x23cm (9.05 inches) XLarge 2×23-25cm (9.05-9.84 inches)
XXLarge 2×25-27cm (9.84-10.62 inches)
After this tutorial I will be rolling out my next set of patterns which will all have filter linings in them for you to slot replacement filters. They are all made roughly in the same way. It will be simple once you have made one. Adapting the filter slot lining to all the patterns will be easy once you have watched this tutorial. I just wanted to make the patterns available so everyone has access to at least one fitted mask, since not all masks suit or fit all face shapes. Believe me, I have sampled a few patterns. Looks good in a photo or tutorial, but fits badly when you try it on!
Be sure to follow or subscribe to ShannieMakes on Facebook, Instagram or YouTube Channel for updates. Facebook is probably easier for me to update everyone since I can add links and folders in there.
See you next time!

Disclaimer/Please take note: My face masks do not replace medical/surgical face masks. These are also not designed to be used on babies or toddlers. Supervision is a must on small children. These are face masks with basic filtration. It is good for dust particles and maybe blocking out some odours.
You are welcome to download and use my patterns to make items for friends, family, neighbours, or even to sell. I only ask of you to help me share or credit me and state where you got the patterns from.

Awww thanks Chris. I have designed and modified so many patterns, I hope at least one is going to fit someone. Lol. So happy to be able to help out. Stay safe. x

Your face mask patterns are the best! I’m a home sewer, so not a pro nor a novice. I can follow medium skill level patterns so I’m comfortable with sewing projects. I have recommended your patterns as I have tried many. I’ve had to make a lot of modifications to others’ patterns just to get things to my liking, but yours are truly the best out there. Your original Duckbill is the one I started with and love that you have created variations that include a reverse filter slot. Love, love, LOVE all that you do. Thanks for bringing joy to all of us.

Thank you Cheryl. I try my best. I am still new to filming and making my content. Hope to improve more in the future. Thanks again. x

Hi Carolyn, thank you for your support. Glad it has helped you.

Hi Helga, I buy proper nose bar wire. You can get them from Amazon, Etsy and Ebay. Just do a quick search. As for filters material, you need a felted fabric. I have access to disposable filters. I am sure you can order them online now.

What do you use for your nose bar material? What type of filters do you suggest?

Thank you so much for making this task easy for non-professional sewers. I have enough basics to make them for my family and to anyone, who hasn’t been able to purchase the disposable ones. Thank you again! 🙂
